💭 What This Means

This day holds one of the hardest and most important chapters in the whole Bible. After Hagar and Ishmael are sent away, with God meeting them in the wilderness too, God tests Abraham in a way that's almost unbearable to read: take your son, your only son, the one the promise depends on, and offer him as a sacrifice. Abraham obeys, walking three days with Isaac beside him, and at the very last moment, God stops his hand and provides a ram in Isaac's place. It's the clearest picture in the Old Testament of what God Himself would do generations later: provide a substitute so a son wouldn't have to die. The chapter ends quietly with the phrase Jehovah Jireh, the Lord will provide. After that comes a string of ordinary endings: Abraham's father Terah dies, Sarah dies, and Abraham, a man promised an entire land, still has to buy a burial cave for his wife because none of it is his yet. Then one of the most tender scenes in Genesis: a servant, sent to find a wife for Isaac, prays a simple, specific prayer at a well, and watches God answer it in detail. Rebekah says yes to a journey she didn't have to take, and the promise moves forward.
