💭 What This Means
Today's reading opens with the tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half of Manasseh, wanting to settle east of the Jordan River because the land was good for their cattle. Moses initially rebukes them sharply, reminding them of how their fathers' fear at Kadesh-barnea led to forty years of wandering. But the tribes clarify their intention: they will go armed before their brothers, fighting until all of Canaan is subdued, and only then return to their inheritance. Moses agrees, warning them that if they don't keep their word, "be sure your sin will find you out." Chapter thirty-three then gives us a detailed list of every single stopping place from Egypt to the plains of Moab. It's a powerful reminder of God's faithful leading through forty years of wilderness. The chapter concludes with God's final, crucial instructions for conquering Canaan: drive out all the inhabitants and destroy their idols, or those left behind will become "pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides."
