💭 What This Means
Today's reading presents two very different but equally important passages. Chapter 30 focuses on the weight of a vow made to the Lord. It lays out clear rules, especially for women, concerning promises they make. This reminds us how seriously God takes our words and commitments. Then, in chapter 31, we see the children of Israel fulfilling God's command to take vengeance on the Midianites for the sin at Peor. It's a difficult chapter, with Moses instructing the soldiers to kill the women who had enticed Israel into idolatry. But amidst the harshness, there's a powerful detail: not one Israelite soldier was lost in the battle. This incredible victory prompted the soldiers to bring a freewill offering of gold jewelry to the Lord, an atonement for their souls, acknowledging God's hand in their protection and success. It's a reminder of God's justice and His faithfulness to His people, even in the midst of war.

Lord, thank You for the seriousness with which You regard our words and promises. Help me to be a person of integrity, careful with my vows.
