💭 What This Means
Today's reading opens with a shocking account of Israel's sin at Baal-peor, where they joined themselves to foreign gods and immorality. God's anger was kindled, and a plague broke out, taking twenty-four thousand lives. Amidst this crisis, Phinehas, a priest, acted with intense zeal for God's holiness. He intervened decisively, stopping the plague and turning away the Lord's wrath. For this, God made a covenant of peace with Phinehas, promising an everlasting priesthood to his descendants. This dramatic event marks a turning point, as the scene shifts to a new census. This detailed counting of all the tribes, from twenty years old and upward, prepares the people for inheriting the Promised Land. Significantly, this census reveals that of the generation that left Egypt, only Caleb and Joshua remain alive. The old generation, marked by disobedience, has passed away. A new generation, poised to enter Canaan, now stands ready.
