💭 What This Means
Today's reading begins with the unique ritual of the red heifer, providing ashes for purification from the defilement of death. It reminds us how constantly the Israelites needed cleansing to be in God's presence. Then we see the consequences of continued grumbling. Miriam dies, and the people complain again about water. Moses, in his anger, strikes the rock instead of speaking to it as God commanded. Because he did not trust God enough to sanctify Him in the eyes of the people, Moses and Aaron are told they will not enter the promised land. Soon after, Aaron dies on Mount Hor, and his priestly garments are transferred to his son Eleazar. The people continue their journey, but their discouragement leads to more complaining, and God sends fiery serpents as judgment. Yet, in His mercy, God provides a way out: a bronze serpent on a pole. Anyone bitten who looked at it would live. This incredible image points us to Jesus, who was lifted up so that all who look to Him in faith might have eternal life. Even with their failures, God continues to lead Israel to victory over their enemies, Sihon and Og, as they move closer to the promised land.

Lord, thank You for Your patience with Your people, even in their grumbling. Thank You for providing a way for them to be cleansed and to live, even when they faced judgment. We are so grateful for the ultimate provision of Jesus, lifted up for our salvation, just as the bronze serpent was for Israel. Help us to always look to Him in faith. In Jesus' name, Amen.
