💭 What This Means
In chapter fifteen, God makes Abram a covenant, but watch closely who actually walks through the pieces of the sacrifice. Not Abram, he's asleep. Only a smoking pot and a flaming torch, symbols of God himself, pass between the halves, meaning God alone takes the full weight of the promise on Himself. But waiting is hard, and in chapter sixteen, Sarai and Abram try to make the promise happen on their own timeline, through Sarai's servant Hagar. It doesn't go well. Hagar flees into the wilderness, pregnant and mistreated, and God meets her there, sees her, and gives her son Ishmael a promise of his own. Even the plan born out of impatience and hurt doesn't fall outside God's care. Then, thirteen years later, in chapter seventeen, God gives Abram a new name, Abraham, father of many nations, and a sign, circumcision, to carry that promise in his own body. Waiting doesn't cancel the promise. It just tests how much we trust the One who made it.

Lord, forgive me for the times I've tried to force Your promises onto my own timeline. Thank You that You see me, the way You saw Hagar in the wilderness, even in the messes I make trying to help You along. Help me wait well. In Jesus' name, Amen.
