💭 What This Means
Today's reading in Leviticus lays out the detailed instructions for the sin offering and trespass offering. It's clear that God takes sin seriously, even unintentional sin. Chapter four describes how different people, from the high priest to a common person, had a specific way to seek forgiveness. A bullock for the priest or the whole community, a goat for a ruler or individual. The ritual involved laying hands on the animal, shedding its blood, and burning parts of it, signifying atonement and forgiveness. Chapter five expands on this, covering specific trespasses like failing to testify or touching unclean things. It even shows God's mercy by allowing different offerings based on a person's ability to pay, from an animal to a bird, or even just flour. Then, in chapter six, we see that for sins against a neighbor, like lying or theft, restitution was required, plus an extra twenty percent. These detailed laws reveal God's heart for justice and reconciliation, providing a way for His people to be made right with Him and with each other. They point to the ultimate sacrifice that would one day make all things new.

Lord, thank You for providing a way for us to deal with our sins. Today's readings show how seriously You take sin, and how much You desire to forgive. Thank You for establishing a path to atonement, and for the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, which makes us clean. Help me to take my sin seriously and to live in the freedom of Your forgiveness.
