💭 What This Means
Paul tackles a tricky issue for the Corinthians: eating food offered to idols. While he acknowledges that idols are nothing and believers have knowledge, he quickly pivots to love. Knowledge can puff us up, he says, but love builds up. Our personal freedom, or "liberty," should never cause a weaker brother or sister to stumble. Paul goes on to share his own example, an apostle who had every right to financial support, but chose not to use it. He became "all things to all people" for the sake of the gospel, like an athlete running for an incorruptible crown. He then warns them against the idolatry and temptations that plagued ancient Israel, reminding them that God is faithful to provide a way out of temptation. Ultimately, whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do, it should all be to the glory of God, seeking the good of others, not just our own. This section ends with Paul urging them to imitate him, just as he imitates Christ.
