💭 What This Means
Today's reading shows Jesus' incredible authority over every kind of brokenness. We begin with the wild man, or men, in the country of the Gadarenes, tormented by a legion of demons. No one could bind him, but Jesus simply speaks, and these powerful evil spirits are cast out, into a herd of pigs, which then rush into the sea. The healed man, now clothed and in his right mind, wants to follow Jesus. But Jesus sends him home to tell his friends what the Lord has done for him, making him a witness in a place where Jesus was asked to leave. Then, we see Jesus' compassionate power again. A synagogue leader, Jairus, desperately asks Jesus to heal his dying daughter. On the way, a woman who has suffered for twelve long years with an issue of blood touches Jesus' garment, believing it will heal her. Immediately, she is made well. Jesus affirms her faith. Even when news comes that Jairus's daughter has died, Jesus tells him, "Do not be afraid, only believe." He goes to the house, and with a simple command, raises the girl from the dead. These stories show that nothing is beyond Jesus' power to heal and restore.
🙏 Let's Pray
Lord, thank You for Your limitless power to heal and restore. Thank You that You meet us in our deepest brokenness, whether it is spiritual torment, chronic illness, or even death. Help me to have the kind of faith that reaches out to You, knowing You can make all things new. In Jesus' name, Amen.
