💭 What This Means

Today's reading takes us from Jesus' infancy through the beginning of his public ministry. We see the wise men worshiping the newborn King, only to face Herod's jealous rage, forcing Joseph and Mary to flee with Jesus to Egypt. Even as a child, Jesus' life was marked by both adoration and danger. Then, we jump forward to Jesus as a twelve-year-old, astounding the temple teachers with his understanding, declaring he must be about his Father's business. Years later, a wild prophet named John appears in the wilderness, preaching repentance and preparing the way for the Lord. He baptizes many, but insists that one far mightier is coming, one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Finally, Jesus himself comes to John to be baptized, though John initially hesitates. As Jesus rises from the water, the heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and God’s voice declares Him His beloved Son, in whom He is well pleased. What a powerful beginning to our Savior's mission.

Lord, thank You for sending Jesus, Your beloved Son. Thank You for His journey from humble birth and hidden childhood to the powerful affirmation at His baptism. Help me to listen for Your voice, just as You spoke from heaven, and to follow Jesus as He begins His work. May I always seek to be about Your business, too. In Jesus' name, Amen.
