💭 What This Means
Today's readings bring us to the end of the Old Testament with Malachi and a powerful message from Joel. Malachi confronts Israel's complacency and unfaithfulness, especially regarding divorce and robbing God of tithes. He reminds them that God hates divorce and that He will send a messenger to prepare the way for the Lord's coming. This coming will be like a refiner's fire, purifying His people and bringing judgment. Yet, God promises to remember those who fear Him. Joel also warns of the "Day of the Lord," describing a devastating locust plague as a sign of judgment, urging the people to rend their hearts, not just their garments, and return to God. He promises that if they repent, God will restore what was lost. Most wonderfully, Joel prophesies a future day when God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh, leading to prophecy, dreams, and visions, and declares that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Both books point to a coming day of reckoning and restoration.

Lord, Your word today reminds us of Your holiness and Your call to return to You with all our hearts. Thank You that You are merciful and slow to anger, always ready to restore. We are especially grateful for the promise of Your Spirit poured out and that whoever calls on Your name will be delivered. Help us to live in light of Your coming day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
