💭 What This Means

Today's reading opens with the dramatic account of Daniel in the lions' den. Daniel, a man of integrity and unwavering prayer, faces a deadly decree because of his devotion to God. Even with certain death looming, he continues to pray openly. God miraculously shuts the mouths of the lions, demonstrating His power and faithfulness. King Darius is deeply moved and issues a new decree, declaring that everyone in his kingdom should fear the God of Daniel. This powerful story shows the triumph of faith over persecution. We then hear Daniel's heartfelt prayer of confession for his people, seeking God's mercy and understanding of Jeremiah's prophecy. In response, the angel Gabriel reveals the prophecy of the seventy weeks, a detailed timeline pointing to the coming Messiah. Finally, we see the amazing fulfillment of prophecy as King Cyrus of Persia, stirred by God, issues a decree allowing the exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. The temple vessels are even returned. This marks the beginning of restoration for God's people, with key figures like Zerubbabel mentioned in the lineage.
