💭 What This Means
Today's reading in Daniel gives us powerful insights into God's sovereignty over history. We begin with Daniel's terrifying dream in chapter seven: four great beasts rise from the sea, representing powerful kingdoms that would come and go. But then, Daniel sees the Ancient of Days on His throne, and "one like the Son of Man" coming with the clouds of heaven to receive an everlasting kingdom. This vision reminds us that no earthly power lasts forever. Chapter eight gives us another vision, this time of a ram and a goat, specifically identifying the kingdoms of Media-Persia and Greece. Even before they rise, God reveals their future through Daniel. Then, we jump back to chapter five, to the dramatic story of King Belshazzar's feast. He defiantly uses the sacred temple vessels, and a hand appears, writing his doom on the wall. Daniel interprets it, declaring that Belshazzar's kingdom is numbered and found wanting. That very night, the Babylonian empire falls. These passages together show us that God is actively involved in the rise and fall of nations, and His kingdom will ultimately prevail.

Lord, these chapters show Your mighty hand at work in history. Thank You that You are sovereign over all nations and all kings. Even when earthly powers seem strong, Your kingdom is the one that will last forever. Help me to live with that eternal perspective today, trusting in Your ultimate plan. In Jesus' name, Amen.
