💭 What This Means
Today's reading opens with a powerful riddle from God, explained in chapter seventeen. It tells the story of two great eagles, representing Babylon and Egypt, and a cedar tree that becomes a vine, symbolizing Jerusalem and its kings. King Zedekiah, placed on the throne by Babylon, broke his covenant and turned to Egypt for help. God declares that this rebellion will not prosper, and He will bring judgment. But even amidst this judgment, God offers a remarkable promise. He will take a tender twig from the high cedar and plant it Himself on a high mountain in Israel, where it will grow into a magnificent tree, offering shelter to all. This is a powerful picture of future hope and restoration. Chapter eighteen then directly confronts the common saying that children suffer for their parents' sins. God declares that each soul is responsible for its own actions. He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but desires them to turn from their ways and live. He calls for repentance and a new heart. Finally, chapter nineteen offers a lament for the fallen princes and the once-fruitful nation, now withered and without a ruler.
