💭 What This Means
Today's reading shows us a terrible sight: the glory of the Lord departing from His temple and from Jerusalem itself. Ezekiel vividly describes the magnificent cherubim and the throne of God moving away, first to the east gate, then to the mountain east of the city. This departure signifies God's judgment on a rebellious people. He condemns the wicked leaders who offer false security, saying 'this city is the caldron, and we be the flesh,' meaning they feel safe within its walls. Ezekiel then acts out the coming exile, packing his belongings and digging through a wall, symbolizing how Jerusalem's prince and people will be taken captive. God also strongly refutes the idea that His prophecies are distant, declaring they are 'at hand.' Amidst this judgment, a powerful promise emerges: God will gather His scattered people, giving them 'one heart' and a 'new spirit,' replacing their stony hearts with hearts of flesh. He also denounces false prophets and prophetesses who offer empty comfort, saying 'peace, when there is no peace,' likening their false messages to weak walls that God will surely tear down.

Lord, today we see Your glory depart from a rebellious people, and Your judgment on false promises. Thank You that even in judgment, You offer the promise of a new heart and spirit. Help me to have a heart of flesh, truly responsive to Your word, and to discern truth from lies. In Jesus' name, Amen.
