💭 What This Means
Today's reading finds Jeremiah wrestling with God, asking a deeply human question: "Why do the wicked prosper?" God responds with a challenge, asking how Jeremiah will handle even tougher times if he's already weary. We then see God use powerful object lessons, like the ruined linen belt, to show how Judah's pride will be marred because they refused to cling to Him. He describes filling them with drunkenness, a metaphor for the coming destruction. The land suffers a severe famine, yet God tells Jeremiah not to pray for the people's good, refusing their offerings because of their deep sin. False prophets are condemned for speaking lies. In the midst of this, Jeremiah cries out in personal anguish, feeling like a "man of strife." But God reassures His prophet, promising to be with him, to save and deliver him, making him like a "fenced brasen wall" against the people.

Lord, sometimes it's hard to understand Your ways, just like Jeremiah. We see suffering and injustice. Help us to be honest with You in our questions and laments. Thank You that You are faithful, even when Your judgments are severe, and that You stand with Your prophets. Give us courage to speak Your truth today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
