💭 What This Means

Today we conclude the book of Isaiah with a powerful message of both judgment and ultimate hope. Chapters sixty-three and sixty-four begin with a heartfelt lament from the people, crying out to God, asking where His strength is, and confessing their utter sinfulness. They acknowledge Him as their Father and Potter, pleading for His mercy despite their "filthy rags" of righteousness. Then, in chapter sixty-five, God responds, revealing His deep anger at their rebellion and idolatry, but also promising a remnant will be saved. He speaks of a stark division between those who serve Him and those who don't. The prophecy then soars to a breathtaking vision: new heavens and a new earth, a New Jerusalem where weeping ceases and peace reigns. Chapter sixty-six reaffirms God's sovereignty and His desire for a humble, contrite heart, ending with a picture of universal worship in the new creation, and judgment for the rebellious. The short historical notes from Kings and Chronicles mark the end of good King Hezekiah's reign.

Lord, we confess with Isaiah that our righteousness is like filthy rags. Thank You for being our Father, our Potter, who shapes us. We look forward to the new heavens and new earth You promise, where all tears will be wiped away. Help us to live with humble and contrite spirits, trembling at Your word, until that day.
