💭 What This Means

Today we see King Hezekiah on his deathbed, receiving a grim prophecy from Isaiah. His heartfelt prayer and tears move the Lord, who quickly promises healing and adds fifteen years to his life. God even gives a miraculous sign, making the sun's shadow go back ten degrees on the sundial. Hezekiah's song of thanksgiving in Isaiah chapter 38 beautifully expresses his gratitude for being delivered from death and the grave. However, after this incredible display of God's mercy, Hezekiah's heart is lifted up in pride. When envoys from Babylon visit, he foolishly shows them all his treasures. Isaiah then delivers a sobering prophecy: all these riches, and even Hezekiah's own sons, will one day be carried off to Babylon. Hezekiah's response reveals his short-sightedness, content that there will be peace in his own lifetime.

Lord, thank You for hearing our prayers and for Your power to heal, just as You did for Hezekiah. Forgive us when our hearts become proud after Your blessings, or when we are short-sighted and focus only on our own comfort. Help us to always remember Your faithfulness and to live with humility and a trust in Your greater plan. In Jesus' name, Amen.
