💭 What This Means
The Preacher in Ecclesiastes begins a profound search for meaning in life "under the sun." He explores wisdom, pleasure, great works, and vast wealth, only to conclude that all of it is "vanity and a chasing after wind." He observes that the wise and the foolish face the same end, and that even hard labor can be left to someone undeserving. Chapter three famously reminds us that there is a season for everything, and God makes everything beautiful in its time. Yet, human understanding is limited. He notes the pain of oppression and the value of companionship. Throughout his observations, he repeatedly points out the emptiness of accumulating riches or striving for earthly satisfaction alone. The only true good he finds is to enjoy the simple gifts of eating, drinking, and finding joy in one's labor, recognizing these as direct gifts from God's hand. He encourages us to fear God and speak carefully before Him, understanding that true contentment comes from above, not from what we achieve or possess on earth.

Lord, thank You for the honest words of the Preacher today. Help me to see the vanity of chasing after things "under the sun" that don't satisfy. Teach me to find true contentment in You and in the good gifts You provide each day. May I fear You and find joy in my work, knowing it comes from Your hand. In Jesus' name, Amen.
