💭 What This Means

Today we witness the tragic end of Solomon's reign. Despite all his wisdom and God's two appearances to him, Solomon loved many foreign women. These wives turned his heart away from the Lord to other gods like Ashtoreth, Milcom, Chemosh, and Molech. God's anger burned against him, and He promised to tear the kingdom from Solomon's son, leaving only one tribe for David's sake. God even raised up adversaries like Hadad and Rezon. The prophet Ahijah then dramatically revealed to Jeroboam that he would rule ten tribes, further confirming the kingdom's division. After Solomon's death, we turn to Ecclesiastes, likely written by him. It opens with the stark declaration, 'Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.' It describes the ceaseless cycles of nature and human labor, concluding there is 'no new thing under the sun.' This profound reflection on life's futility rings especially true after seeing the downfall of the wisest and wealthiest king.
