💭 What This Means
Today's psalms begin with a cry of deep distress. Psalm 79 describes the utter devastation of Jerusalem, the temple defiled, and God's people slaughtered, asking 'How long, Lord?' Psalm 80 continues this lament, pleading with God to 'Turn us again' and comparing Israel to a vine brought out of Egypt, now broken and ravaged. It's a powerful image of a people feeling abandoned. Then, Psalm 81 shifts to a call for joyful worship, but quickly turns into God's own lament. He reminds Israel of His deliverance from Egypt and His desire for them to listen, saying 'Oh that my people had hearkened unto me.' He expresses His heartbreak that they would not walk in His ways. Finally, Psalm 82 reveals God standing in judgment over the 'gods,' likely human rulers who judge unjustly. He commands them to defend the poor and needy, declaring that they too will die like men. The psalm ends with a powerful plea for God to 'Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.' These psalms show both the pain of God's people and His righteous heart for justice.
