💭 What This Means

Today's reading shows us a troubling event in David's reign: his decision to take a census of the fighting men. While 2 Samuel says the Lord's anger moved David, 1 Chronicles tells us Satan provoked him. Joab, David's general, knew this was wrong, but David insisted. As a result, God sent a plague upon Israel. David repented deeply, confessing his foolishness and pleading for his people. God offered David a choice of punishments, and David chose to fall into the Lord's hand, trusting His great mercies. Seventy thousand people died, but God stopped the angel of destruction at the threshing floor of Araunah. David bought the land, insisting on paying full price, saying he would not offer to the Lord what cost him nothing. There, he built an altar and offered sacrifices, and the plague was stayed. This very spot became the future site of the Temple, which David prepared for extensively, even though God told him his son Solomon would build it. David charged Solomon to be strong and courageous, and to keep God's law as he undertook this great work.

Lord, we confess that we often act out of pride or foolishness, just like David. Thank You for Your great mercies, even when we fall short. Help us to repent quickly and to trust in Your provision. May we always be willing to give You our best, not what costs us nothing. Strengthen us to prepare for the good works You have for us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
