💭 What This Means

Today's reading is a whirlwind of events, revealing both the depths of human sin and the steadfastness of God. Hushai's clever counsel saves David's life, leading to Ahithophel's tragic suicide. David, on the run, finds refuge and provision from loyal supporters. Amidst this chaos, we hear David's heart in Psalms 3 and 63, crying out to God as his shield and sustainer, longing for Him even in the wilderness. The climax comes in the battle where Absalom is killed, caught in an oak tree. Joab, despite David's command for mercy, ends Absalom's life. David's profound grief over his son's death is almost unbearable to read, turning the victory into mourning. Yet, even in this sorrow, God begins the process of restoring David to his throne, and David shows mercy to those who opposed him, like Shimei and Mephibosheth.
