💭 What This Means
Today, we witness the tragic beginning of Absalom's rebellion against his father, King David. Absalom cunningly wins the hearts of the people by pretending to be their advocate, then uses a false vow to gather support in Hebron. When news reaches David, he makes the painful decision to flee Jerusalem to spare the city from war. We see powerful moments of loyalty, like Ittai the Gittite refusing to leave David's side, and David's humility as he sends the Ark of the Covenant back to the city, entrusting his fate to God. He even prays for God to thwart Ahithophel's wise counsel. God answers that prayer through Hushai, David's loyal friend, who acts as a double agent. While on his journey, David encounters Ziba, who falsely accuses Mephibosheth, and then Shimei, who curses David. David's response to Shimei is remarkable, accepting it as potentially from the Lord. Back in Jerusalem, Ahithophel advises Absalom to publicly disgrace David by sleeping with his concubines. Then, Ahithophel proposes a swift attack on David, but Hushai's counter-counsel, designed to delay, is favored by Absalom because the Lord intended to defeat Ahithophel's wise plan.

Lord, this reading shows how quickly things can turn, and how easily hearts can be swayed. Help me to trust in Your providence, even when I face betrayal or unfair accusations, just as David did. Give me humility to accept what comes and to pray for Your intervention. Thank You that You often work through unexpected ways to accomplish Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen.
