💭 What This Means
Numbers chapter four gives us a deep dive into the detailed work of the Levites, specifically how they were to transport the Tabernacle. Each of the three clans, the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites, had very specific jobs. They carried everything from the most holy objects like the Ark, to the curtains, to the structural boards. This wasn't just busywork; it showed how seriously God took holiness, even in the moving of His dwelling place. They had to be between thirty and fifty years old to serve. Then in chapter five, we get laws about keeping the Israelite camp pure. This included putting out those who were unclean due to leprosy, discharges, or death, because God dwelt in the midst of the camp. We also see laws about making restitution for wrongs, and the surprising "ordeal of bitter water" for a wife suspected of adultery, where God Himself would reveal the truth. It all emphasizes God's desire for a holy people and a holy place.
