💭 What This Means
James reminds us that the source of our conflicts often comes from within, from our own desires. He urges us to humble ourselves before the Lord, to draw near to God, and to resist the devil, promising that God gives grace to the humble. We're reminded that life is a vapor, and we should live with the phrase "if the Lord wills" on our lips. James also gives practical instruction on the power of prayer for the afflicted, the sick, and the importance of confessing our faults to one another. He even points to Elijah as an example of powerful, earnest prayer. Then, in 1 Timothy, Paul encourages his son in the faith to hold to sound doctrine and a good conscience. He reminds us that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, with Paul himself being a powerful example of God's abundant mercy. Paul calls us to pray for all people, especially our leaders, so that we may live peaceful lives, knowing there is one God and one mediator, Jesus Christ.

Lord, it's humbling to hear that so much conflict comes from my own desires. Help me to humble myself before You, to draw near, and to resist what pulls me away. Give me a pure heart and teach me to pray effectively, not for my own lusts, but for Your will. I pray for all people, and for our leaders, as You desire. In Jesus' name, Amen.
