💭 What This Means

Today we witness the tragic decline after good King Josiah. His son Jehoahaz reigns only three months before being deposed by Egypt, and then his brother Jehoiakim takes the throne, both doing evil in the Lord's sight. Jeremiah confronts Jehoiakim directly, condemning his injustice, covetousness, and shedding of innocent blood. He warns that if they do not repent and obey, Jerusalem and the temple will become desolate, like Shiloh. Despite Jeremiah's faithful preaching for twenty-three years, the people and their leaders largely ignore him. Jehoiakim even murders another prophet, Urijah, for speaking God's word. The Lord declares that because they have not listened, He will bring Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, as His servant to utterly destroy the land. This desolation will last for seventy years, a direct consequence of their persistent rebellion and the unpardoned sins of past kings.

Lord, thank You for Your patience and for sending prophets like Jeremiah to warn Your people. Forgive me for the times I have been slow to listen to Your word or to obey Your commands. Help me to have a heart that truly hears and responds to You, turning from evil and pursuing justice. May I never harden my heart against Your truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
