💭 What This Means
Today, we hear the words of Agur, who humbly admits his lack of understanding compared to God. He asks for two things: to be kept from lies and to have neither poverty nor riches, so he won't deny God or steal. He observes insatiable things like the grave and fire, and things too wonderful to comprehend, like an eagle in the sky or a ship at sea. We also see four small but wise creatures: ants, conies, locusts, and the spider found in kings' palaces. Then we move to the words King Lemuel's mother taught him. She warns against women who destroy kings and strong drink that corrupts judgment. Instead, she urges him to speak up for the poor and the needy. The chapter concludes with the well-known description of the virtuous woman. She is diligent, rising early, working willingly, and caring for her household. She is wise, kind, strong, and generous to the poor. Her children call her blessed, and her husband praises her, for her true beauty comes from fearing the Lord.
