💭 What This Means
Today we begin the book of Isaiah, and right away we hear God's heart for His people, and His deep disappointment. Jerusalem, once a faithful city, has become corrupt. Leaders love bribes, and the vulnerable are ignored. God promises to cleanse and restore His people, but first, there will be judgment. Chapter two paints a beautiful picture of a future where all nations will come to God's house, and war will be no more. Yet, the people are filled with idols and pride, forgetting the Lord. Chapter three continues this theme of judgment, describing leaders taken away and the consequences of the people's sin, including the vanity of the daughters of Zion. But even in judgment, there's a glimmer of hope for a holy remnant. Chapter five gives us the famous "Song of the Vineyard," where God describes planting Israel like a beautiful vineyard, only for it to produce wild, sour grapes. This leads to a series of woes against those who are greedy, drunk, unjust, and call evil good. God's anger is kindled, and a fierce enemy is coming. This is a stark reminder of God's justice, but also His longing for His people to bear good fruit.

Lord, Your longing for Your people to bear good fruit is clear in today's reading. Forgive us when we produce wild grapes instead of righteousness. Humble our pride and help us to seek justice and mercy. Make our hearts faithful, so that we may walk in Your light. In Jesus' name, Amen.
