💭 What This Means

Today we see a stark contrast in leadership for Judah. King Ahaz, in his desperate times, chose to abandon the Lord, sacrificing to foreign gods and even remodeling the temple after an Assyrian altar he saw in Damascus. His actions brought more ruin, not help. But then, his son Hezekiah takes the throne, and what a difference. He immediately reverses course, doing what is right in God's eyes. He cleanses the land of idols, even breaking the bronze serpent Moses made, and trusts fully in the Lord. We also hear from Isaiah, foretelling judgment on Damascus and other nations for forgetting God, but also a beautiful song of salvation for those who trust Him. And the prophet Hosea uses the powerful, painful imagery of his own marriage to an unfaithful wife to show Israel's spiritual adultery. Yet, even in this heavy judgment, God promises a future where His people will return to Him and be called His children once more.

Lord, today's reading shows us the consequences of turning away from You, and the blessings of trusting You. Help me to be like Hezekiah, to turn from anything that dishonors You, and to cling to You alone. Thank You for Your patience and Your promise of restoration, even when we are unfaithful. May I always look to You, my Maker. In Jesus' name, Amen.
