💭 What This Means

Today opens with King Ahaziah of Israel, injured and turning to Baal-zebub, a false god, instead of the Lord. Elijah boldly confronts this rejection of Israel's God, prophesying Ahaziah's death. When Ahaziah sends captains to seize Elijah, God's fire consumes two groups, showing His mighty power. Only a humbled captain is spared, and Elijah delivers God's final message to the king. We then see Ahaziah's brother, Jehoram, take the throne. Later, he, along with King Jehoshaphat of Judah, faces a war with Moab. When their armies run out of water, Jehoshaphat insists they seek a prophet of the Lord. They find Elisha, who, after a minstrel plays, prophesies miraculous water and victory. God provides the water, and the Moabites are confused by the red morning sun on it, thinking it's blood. The Israelites defeat them, but the King of Moab makes a horrific sacrifice of his son. The readings also trace the end of good King Jehoshaphat's reign and the beginning of his wicked son Jehoram's rule in Judah, who even slays his own brothers. Yet, even in Judah's wickedness, God promises He will not destroy David's line.

Lord, thank You for being the only true God. Forgive us when we turn to other things for help instead of You. Give us the wisdom to seek Your prophets and Your word, and the courage to trust in Your mighty power, just as You provided for Your people in the wilderness. Keep Your promises to us, even when we fail. In Jesus' name, Amen.
