We hear again the call to bow down our ear and apply our heart to knowledge, trusting that the Lord is the ultimate source. The verses cover everything from how to treat the poor and not oppress the afflicted, to avoiding angry company lest we learn their ways. We're warned about the fleeting nature of riches, how they can fly away like an eagle, and reminded of the dangers of gluttony and drunkenness, which lead to poverty and sorrow. There's strong encouragement to discipline children and to honor our parents. The passage also contrasts the slothful, whose field is overgrown with thorns, with the diligent, who stand before kings.
