💭 What This Means

Today we witness the end of an era, as King David gives his final instructions to his son Solomon. He charges Solomon to walk in God's ways, keeping His commands, and to deal wisely with those who had been loyal and those who had wronged David. This includes practical justice for Joab and Shimei, and kindness for the sons of Barzillai. Then, in his very last words, David reflects on God's Spirit speaking through him and the everlasting covenant God made with his house. Even with the imperfections of his own family, David trusts in God's sure promise. We then hear of David's death after forty years of reign and Solomon's peaceful ascension. The Psalms throughout our reading echo David's life of faith and struggle. They speak of trusting God in distress, finding refuge in Him from enemies, and proclaiming His excellent name. They remind us that God hears our cries, blesses the righteous, and judges the world with uprightness, even when foundations seem to crumble.

Lord, thank You for the example of David, who sought to walk in Your ways, even in his final charge. Thank You for Your everlasting covenant, which is sure even when our own lives or families fall short. Help me to trust in You completely, to find my refuge in You, and to proclaim Your excellent name in all the earth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
