💭 What This Means
Today we witness a pivotal shift in Israel's history. King Saul, chosen by God, disobeys a direct command regarding the Amalekites. He spares their king and the best livestock, claiming it was for sacrifice. But Samuel delivers a powerful message: "To obey is better than sacrifice." Because Saul rejected the word of the Lord, God rejects him as king. Then, God sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king. Samuel is told not to look at outward appearance, but at the heart. After Jesse's older sons are passed over, the youngest, David, a shepherd boy, is chosen and filled with the Spirit. Unexpectedly, David is later brought to Saul's court to soothe the troubled king with his harp. The reading closes with the Philistines defying Israel, and their giant champion, Goliath, taunting God's people. David arrives on the scene, still a young man, indignant that this "uncircumcised Philistine" would defy the armies of the living God. The stage is set for a dramatic encounter.

Lord, thank You for showing us today that You look at the heart, not just outward appearance. Help me to remember that obedience to Your word is better than any sacrifice I could offer. Give me courage like David, to stand up for Your name when others are afraid. In Jesus' name, Amen.
